What is the showdown?
The Five-Second Showdown is a contest between 12 conversion experts and 12 CRO Day attendees like you. The goal is to improve the clarity of a landing page, to make it easier to understand its value proposition. It all begins with a landing page representing a fictitious company.

Oli Gardner, the showdown’s judge, jury, and conversion critic, will run a 5-second test on the landing page to establish a baseline clarity score - which the contestants then have to beat.

What is a 5-second test?
A five-second test is a qualitative experiment, where test participants are shown a screenshot of the above-the-fold portion of a landing page for - you guessed it - five seconds. They are then asked a question such as ““What is this page about?” And “What do you think the goal of the page is?”.

The baseline score will be based on the % of correct answers to the question out of a sample of 25 test subjects. When the test is complete, you will have 25 written answers to the question - the purpose of which is to glean insights into any potential clarity problems.

  1. 12 CRO Day attendees will be chosen (based on their answer to the challenge question) to compete against the 12 pros. Enter your details below to apply.
  2. Our judge, Unbounce's Oli Gardner will run a 5-second test (using UsabilityHub.com) on the landing page to establish the baseline score.
  3. Contestants (12 pros and 12 attendees) will use a free Unbounce account to make modifications to the landing page. This can be copy changes, design changes, basically anything to help make the value proposition more clear to a visitor.
  4. Contestants MUST be available between September 26-28 to make two rounds of changes to the landing page, and MUST be available to be on the live Google Hangout on September 29th at 1pm PST / 4pm EST.
  5. Oli, will run the new 5-second tests (using UsabilityHub.com) based on the contestants altered pages to see if they can beat the baseline score.
  6. A leaderboard will be updated showing everyone’s scores.
  7. Contestants can then use the results of the tests (the 25 written responses) to identify clarity problems and make a second new version of the landing page using Unbounce.
  8. Oli will run a final round of tests and update the leaderboard with the final scores.
  9. Based on the leaderboard, the top 3 contestants get to appear on a live Google Hangout on CRO Day (at 1pm PST/4pm EST), where Oli will guide us through an entertaining recap of the contest, discussing the approach the contestants took to improve the value prop of the landing page.
  10. And yes, there will be prizes! The top 2 contestants win tickets to Call to Action Conference in 2017. (Note: the pros don't get any prizes).
